Getting Started with Trezor Suite®
Welcome — this guide walks you through the first-time setup of Trezor Suite®, so you can securely manage your crypto. Follow each step carefully: hardware security depends on a correct setup and mindful handling of your recovery seed.
What is Trezor Suite®?
Trezor Suite® is the official desktop and web application for interacting with Trezor hardware wallets. It provides a secure, user-friendly interface for onboarding, sending and receiving coins, managing multiple wallets, and interacting with supported third-party services — all while ensuring your private keys never leave your device.
Before you begin
Gather the following and choose a calm, private place:
- A genuine Trezor device (Model T or Model One).
- A computer with a modern browser or the Trezor Suite desktop app installed.
- A stable internet connection (the Trezor device itself does not require internet access).
- Paper and a pen for writing your recovery seed — never store it digitally.
Important: Only download Trezor Suite from the official site. Do not use links from unsolicited emails or social media. Official downloads and support information are provided by the manufacturer.
Step-by-step setup
The following numbered steps will guide you through the initial onboarding. Read each step fully before proceeding.
-
Install Trezor Suite® or open the official web app.
Choose between the desktop app (recommended for convenience) or the official web interface. Install using the official installer or open the official URL in a secure browser.
-
Connect your device.
Use the USB cable included with your Trezor to connect it to your computer. The first connection will trigger the device to display a welcome message and prompt you to install firmware if needed.
-
Install firmware (if prompted).
Trezor devices ship either with factory firmware or require an official firmware update. Follow on-screen instructions in Trezor Suite; the device will show a fingerprint and confirm the update. Only authorize firmware updates that are signed by the manufacturer.
-
Create a new wallet.
When asked, choose Create new to generate a fresh wallet. The device will generate a recovery seed (12–24 words depending on the model and options). Never reveal these words to anyone.
-
Write down your recovery seed.
The device will display each word of your recovery seed on its screen. Write every word clearly, in order, on the recovery card that came with your Trezor or on paper. Store the paper in a secure physical location — consider multiple geographically-separated copies for redundancy.
-
Set a PIN.
Choose a strong PIN using the on-device keypad — the PIN protects the device from unauthorized physical use. The PIN is entered through the device screen (not your computer), ensuring it cannot be captured by malicious software.
-
Confirm your setup.
Trezor Suite will typically ask you to confirm key steps (PIN, seed confirmation) to ensure the wallet setup is complete. Complete all checks shown both in the app and on the device.
Pro tip: After setup, run a small test transaction (send a tiny amount of the coin you plan to use) to confirm everything works before transferring larger amounts.
Using Trezor Suite®
The Suite interface groups functionality into key areas: Overview, Accounts, Send, Receive, Exchange, and Settings. Your private keys remain on the device — the Suite acts as a safe, feature-rich controller.
Receive
Select the account and click Receive. Always verify the receiving address on the physical device screen before sharing it. Address verification prevents malware from substituting addresses.
Send
To send, choose Send, enter the recipient address and amount, then confirm the details on your device. Confirming transactions on-device is the critical security step: it ensures the transaction you approve is exactly what will be signed.
Accounts & asset management
Create multiple accounts for different coin types or for organizational purposes. Trezor Suite supports a wide range of cryptocurrencies and token standards — check the supported list in the app.
Backup & recovery
Your recovery seed is the only complete backup of your wallet. If the device is lost, damaged, or stolen, the seed allows you to recover funds on a compatible device or software that supports the seed standard.
- Never store the seed digitally (photos, cloud, text files).
- Consider using metal backup plates for fire/water resistance.
- Keep backup copies in secure, separate locations (e.g., safe deposit box).
Security best practices
- Always verify addresses and transaction details on the Trezor device screen.
- Keep firmware updated, but only when updates are presented within the official Suite interface.
- Beware of phishing: check the URL and certificate when using the web app.
- Use a passphrase (optional advanced feature) only if you understand it — it acts as a 25th seed word and adds strong protection but increases complexity for recovery.
Troubleshooting
If the device is not recognized:
- Try a different USB cable and port.
- Restart the computer and reconnect.
- Ensure you installed the official Trezor Suite and allowed any driver prompts.
If you lost your seed, funds cannot be recovered — this is why secure backups are essential. For other issues, consult official support resources listed below.
Quick FAQs
- Can I recover my wallet on another device?
- Yes — with your full recovery seed you can restore your wallet on any compatible device or software that supports the same standard.
- Is the passphrase the same as the seed?
- No. A passphrase is an optional extra secret that augments the seed. Losing the passphrase will make the associated accounts inaccessible even if you have the seed.
- Should I update firmware immediately?
- Install firmware updates when offered in the official Trezor Suite. Firmware updates are important for security but should be sourced only from the official channel.
Support & resources
If you need help, start from the Help or Support sections inside Trezor Suite. Official documentation and community resources provide step-by-step troubleshooting and guides.
For safety, never share your recovery seed or private keys with support agents — legitimate support will never ask for them.
